Manorathangal Web Series Review

Calmness can signify either a state of contentment or a profound numbness resulting from inner turmoil. In Manorathangal, M.T. Vasudevan Nair’s characters resonate more with the latter interpretation. On the surface, these characters appear to be individuals content in the tranquility of their surroundings and the warmth of their families. However, M.T.’s scintillating stories create an inviting world that contrasts with the complex psychology of the characters, a complexity that the screen adaptation struggles to fully capture.

M.T. penned these stories at different points in his life, and while the emotions embedded within them have undeniably stood the test of time, the visual execution’s grammar seems out of sync with contemporary sensibilities. In recent years, cinema has been attempting to move away from longstanding portrayals of class and caste norms. At such a time, reintroducing a setting steeped in upper-caste and upper-class privileges may feel like a step backward. However, these depictions serve more as a backdrop rather than a central theme in the anthology. The emotional upheavals experienced by the main characters in each story provide a sense of purpose to the narratives.

Despite the revival of a bygone era where Savarna people were addressed as Thampuran or Thampuratti, it is the inner turmoil that lends depth and complexity to the narratives. Manorathangal is an exploration of character emotions, though the anthology misses the mark in fully conveying this.

Each film in Manorathangal begins with an introduction by Kamal Haasan, who sets the stage for the upcoming story. He offers an overview of the plot, carefully balancing what to reveal and what to keep hidden, while sharing his personal insights. The anthology, which consists of nine films, each with a runtime of 30 minutes to an hour, starts with Priyadarshan’s Shilalikhitham (Inscriptions).

Departing from his usual comedic style, Priyadarshan directs two films with distinctive visual aesthetics. In Shilalikhitham, Biju Menon’s character, Gopalan Kutty, comes to realize that he is unknowingly bound to a state of mind he has been trying to escape. In Priyadarshan’s second film, Olavum Theeravum, featuring Mohanlal and Durga Krishna, he reimagines the classic film of the same name. While the former is harmless, the latter falls short due to an underwhelming performance from the cast and feels out of touch with contemporary relevance. Unfortunately, the emotional depth in other films, such as Jayaraj’s Swargam Thurakkuna Samayam and Rathish Ambat’s Kadalkkaattu, also falls short. The straightforward stories—one about a father abandoned by his children and another dealing with infidelity—fail to evoke the necessary emotional connection, leaving the audience without a strong sense of empathy for the characters.

Meanwhile, Vilpana, directed by Aswathy V. Nair and starring Asif Ali and Madhoo, struggles to engage the audience due to its largely conversational nature, despite a touching resolution. However, Mahesh Narayanan’s Sherlock, Shyamaprasad’s Kazhcha, and Ranjith’s Kadugannawa Oru Yathra Kurippu stand out as the best of the lot. Set in the United States, Sherlock features stellar performances by Fahadh Faasil and Nadiya Moidu and introduces an eponymous character—a cat.

Sherlock departs from the typical visual style of Manorathangal, offering a fresh and unique approach. The story skillfully explores human emotions while using a cat’s life as a metaphor. Along with the outstanding performances, the impactful music adds depth to the film, making it both thought-provoking and entertaining. Sherlock encourages introspection and reflection on humanity through the lens of an animal, while Kazhcha urges people to reflect on one another and embrace their true selves. Diverging from the usual feminist narrative, Kazhcha implies empowerment through the delicate yet powerful character of Sudha, portrayed effectively by Parvathy Thiruvothu.

Despite its flaws, Manorathangal shines through the performances of its cast and captivating visuals. As the camera gracefully moves through ancestral homes, green fields, deserted lanes, and cobblestone pavements, the warmth of the world depicted by M.T.’s words envelops the viewer.
