Berlin Movie Review

Atul Sabharwal’s Berlin blends a conspiracy thriller with a deep exploration of political dynamics intersecting with personal ambition. The film offers a fresh perspective on the espionage genre, with a strong sense of time and place.

The title refers to a café in Delhi that serves as a discreet meeting spot for intelligence agents from various countries. Alongside serving chocolate eclairs and vegetable puffs, the café is steeped in intrigue, with its deaf-mute staff playing a crucial role in maintaining the secrecy of the operations conducted there.

Set in 1993, just after the Cold War has ended and the Berlin Wall has fallen, Berlin draws on a nostalgia for a time of clearer political divisions.

Pushkin Verma, a sign language teacher (played by Aparshakti Khurana), is a nod to the era of Indo-Soviet camaraderie. He is called upon by Jagdish (Rahul Bose), an officer from the Bureau, to assist in the interrogation of Ashok (Ishwak Singh), a deaf-mute man suspected of involvement in a plot to assassinate the Russian premier during his visit to Delhi.

While Ashok cannot hear or speak, he has keen observation skills and a strong sense of purpose. As Jagdish is convinced of Ashok’s guilt, Pushkin begins to suspect that Ashok may be an innocent pawn in a larger conspiracy.

The 119-minute Hindi film is now available on ZEE5, with sign language playing a crucial role in Atul Sabharwal’s screenplay.
